Build phrases with unusual lengths: 3 beats + 5 beats + 2 beats + 6 beats = 16 beat cycle. Each phrase must feel complete despite the odd timing. Use dynamics to make each phrase length feel natural. Connect positions 1, 3, and 5 smoothly.
Tip: Breaking out of 4-beat thinking creates unpredictable, engaging melodies. Great songs often use asymmetrical phrases that feel perfectly natural.
