For G-Am changes, hold the G note (3rd fret, 1st string) constant while changing the bass and inner notes underneath. G chord: play G-B-D with G on top. Am chord: play A-C-E with the same G on top. Practice 8 smooth changes.
Tip: Common tones are like anchors in rough seas - they keep you steady while everything else moves around them.
